Year 12 Duke of Edinburgh pupils spark bright ideas at Octopus Energy career day

A group of Year 12 pupils recently enjoyed an inspiring and educational day out networking at the offices of green energy supplier Octopus Energy. Organised in collaboration with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, the trip was attended by pupils who have either completed or are currently working towards their Bronze, Silver, or Gold awards. Throughout the day, the visitors were given a unique insight into the inner workings of the company and the diverse career paths available within the renewable energy sector.

The day began with an introduction to Octopus Energy and its mission to drive the global green revolution. Pupils then heard from staff members across a variety of departments, who shared stories of their own professional journeys. A key takeaway for the young audience was that there is no single, linear route into the industry, with employees arriving from a wide range of backgrounds. Following these presentations, the pupils were taken on a comprehensive tour of the buildings, where they had the opportunity to ask questions and even pick up some company freebies.

After a lunch provided by the hosts, the focus shifted to a practical group challenge. The pupils were divided into teams and tasked with developing an innovative idea or brand collaboration that Octopus Energy could pursue. Each group then had to deliver a five-minute presentation defending their concepts and outlining their reasoning. Photographs highlighting the impressive ideas and presentation slides from the afternoon have been shared on the dedicated Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Instagram page. The event proved to be a resounding success, with several pupils already requesting information on work experience and the summer internship opportunities run by the company.
