Celebrating VE Day
In a week of thoughtful reflection and celebration, the History faculty, led by Miss Fitzpatrick, organised a series of engaging activities across the school to mark Victory in Europe (VE) Day. Special thanks also go to Mrs Hirst, Mrs Warrick, Mr Butterfield, Mr Biswell and Mr Sorrell for their invaluable contributions.
Students from across the school took part in a wide range of events. Lower School students created a poignant Wall of Remembrance, contributing personal family stories, photographs, recipes, newspaper clippings, letters, and diary excerpts. These powerful displays reflected the human experiences of World War II, focusing on themes such as resilience, camaraderie, and co-operation.
Alongside the wall, students also produced PowerPoint presentations, movies, and animations that explored the end of World War II in Europe, the subsequent rebuilding efforts, and the impact on Britain and its former colonies.
A creative competition saw Form Groups challenged to design VE Day commemorative bunting. Congratulations go to 9 Burleigh, whose design was selected as the winner.
Adding to the atmosphere, Mr Butterfield organised a live musical performance featuring wartime songs, while 800 delicious cookies, baked through an effort organised by Mr Biswell and Mr Sorrell, were sold to raise funds. The cookie sale and musical performances raised an impressive £762, all of which was donated to the Royal British Legion.
The week concluded with a moving VE Day Assembly, bringing the whole school together in remembrance and appreciation of the sacrifices made by previous generations.
